Vegetables

Our vegetable project supports Community Clubs by providing 3 packets of seeds. Members grow and harvest the produce which they can sell for an income at the market. This income is then reinvested to allow their small businesses to grow. In conjuction with the seeds, members are also taught basic business and finance skills to be able to start a chicken business.

Chickens

As well as the vegetable project, once members of the community clubs have learnt how to run a small business, we then support them to start a chicken business. They buy 10 chicks plus feed and vaccines and after 6 weeks, the chickens are ready to be sold.

Sweet Potato

A large part of the projects we support is the sweet potato project in Malawi. In partnership with Ripple Africa, we supply vines to 1,250 farmers every year.

Each family receives 1000 vines enabling them to have enough sweet potatoes to feed their family and sell the surplus at local markets.

Traditionally, locals would grow and eat white sweet potato. However, we supply the more nutritionally dense orange fleshed sweet potato which are also higher yielding. This provides more food and better nutrition.

This project is also feeding children in school. Teachers are given vines to grow and feed their students. This has many benefits to include providing food and better nutrition for the children in attendance but to also encourage children to go to school as they know they will get fed. By having access to a good meal at school the children are then able to get involved with their classes and improve their prospects to get out of poverty.

Fruit Trees

Working with 100 community clubs, we support growing a variety of fruit trees. Not only does this project provide a more varied and nutritious diet for the families growing them, but any surplus can be sold and therefore start to provide an income. This means families can improve their homes, buy pens and school uniforms for their children, and be able to pay for transport to medical centres should they need it.

We plant papaya, guava, avocado, mango, tamarind and citrus trees and teach them how to care for the seedlings. We cover how to make manure and natural fertilisers, identify pests and how to protect the trees from livestock when they are planted out.

We do all this to ensure that they move away from being dependant on aid. We aim to provide this initial support but our true success will be when these areas and people do not need us anymore.
